Weather forecaster collects and summarises the data prepared by meteorologists and prepares reports and forecasts for public. They usually collect data about temperatures, precipitation and air currents. Some companies use services of weather forecasters, such as air forces, sailing organisations, farmers, the armed forces and a number of others.

Tasks:

1. Using computer systems and observing the data from satellite images, radars, remote sensors and weather stations
2. Preparing weather forecasts for a day, a week or a month
3. Predicting the weather of the local geographic area
4. Making warnings of severe weather conditions, such as hurricanes, huge thunders and stating precisely the time, place and intensity of them
5. Using physical and mathematical models and interpreting the data to make short-range or long-range weather forecasts
6. Broadcasting weather forecasts for the media, for state or private companies
7. Preparing reports and data for consumers

Qualifications and training:

All entrants to this work are graduates and many hold higher degrees. Depending on the role, degree subjects most acceptable for entry include: meteorology; mathematics; physics and physical sciences; physical geography; computer science/software engineering; ocean science; environmental sciences.

A postgraduate degree is required for research posts and, although not essential for other types of work, may increase your chances of appointment to meteorology positions generally.
