Description

A football coach is someone who organizes and directs a football team. That includes everyone from the players to scouts to water boy to assistant coaches. The football coach plans and organizes practice, calls plays during games, gives motivational pre-game and halftime speeches and is expected to give his team the best chance possible to win.

Tasks:

  1. Plan coaching activities, sessions and programmes
  2. Provide feedback and give advice on players' performance, fitness and technical skills
  3. Develop and discuss strategies and tactics for both individual and team play
  4. Give guidance on nutrition, and injury recognition and prevention
  5. Research good practice and innovative examples of coaching from around the world
  6. Advise players on how to keep up a positive mental attitude and self-discipline.

  • Energy, enthusiasm and the ability to motivate others
  • Knowledge of, and keen interest in, football
  • Good communication skills
  • Patience and determination to succeed
  • Flexibility and the ability to adapt to changing environments, ability groups and weather conditions
  • Ability to give tactful, positive advice and constructive criticism
  • Good organisational and planning skills
  • Confident and professional manner.

Average salary (2013):

The United Kingdom: Full time-community football coaches can earn between £13,500 and £24,000 a year. Football League/Premiership coaches may earn between £25,000 and around £250,000, depending on the role of the coach and the level of the club.
The United States of America: $1.64 million per a year
Australia: AU$2.5 million per year

Qualifications and training required:

There are technically no formal postsecondary education requirements for football coaches, and in some cases, experience in the sport may be enough.
