Description

A Museum Guide is a creative, imaginative, enthusiastic individual, who provides interpretative services to Museum visitors through guided tours and workshops, as well as special events such as family programs, exhibit openings, adult activities, and Museum Outreach programs, locally and state-wide. All activities relate to the Museum’s mission and collection areas.

Tasks:

1. Describe tour points of interest to group members, and respond to questions
2. Escort individuals or groups on cruises, sightseeing tours, or through places of interest such as industrial establishments, public buildings, and art galleries
3. Monitor visitors' activities to ensure compliance with establishment or tour regulations and safety practices
4. Research various topics, including site history, environmental conditions, and clients' skills and abilities to plan appropriate expeditions, instruction, and commentary
5. Distribute brochures, show audiovisual presentations, and explain establishment processes and operations at tour sites
6. Greet and register visitors, and issue any required identification badges or safety devices
7. Speak foreign languages to communicate with foreign visitors

Qualifications and training required:

A bachelor's degree is the minimum education requirement for museum guide, though preference is often given to applicants who have a master's degree and/or work experience. A PhD is necessary for some higher-level positions.
