Description
Gas station salesperson under general supervision provides customer services at the gas station, including but not limited to cashiering, sales assistance, and stocking. They are responsible for cashiering, collecting cash payments from customers and making change, or charging purchases to customers' credit cards and providing customers with receipts. They order stock, and price and shelve incoming goods, and provide assistance and customer service. If needed gas station salesperson can offer information about available services and products, describe benefits for permanent customers and make product or service suggestions based on a customer's needs. They may also clean, collect, and dispose outside trash.

Previous work experience in retail can be valuable, but generally is not obligatory for the position of gas station salesperson. Relevant knowledge and skills include: money handling / counting, customer relations, interpersonal relations, general cleaning skills, multi-tasking, working in a fast-paced environment; ability to use touch screen cash registers, lotto machine, fax machine, espresso maker, calculator, and food stamp machine.
Tasks:
- Manage cash, including cash register balancing before and after shift and making deposits.
- Be familiar with and utilize knowledge of acceptable forms of identification and rules for the sale of alcohol, tobacco and lottery items
- Assist customers with online lotto sales and self-serve beverage making when needed
- Call for assistance when more than two people are in line and all gas pumps are busy
- Identify when help is needed at gas pumps by using intercoms or visual in-person or tv monitoring
- Identify suspicious customers and handle them according to established procedures
- Handle customer complaints when appropriate or elevate to manager level
- Monitor dirty and wet floors, display appropriate safety signs when necessary, maintain coffee machines, hot food bar, and food counter areas.
- Stock supplies and merchandise as necessary, including counting and stocking cigarettes
- Watch for and recognize security risks and thefts, and know how to prevent or handle these situations

Qualifications and training required:
In order to become a salesperson at gas station an applicant must be at least 18 years of age. This occupation doesn't have any formal educational requirements but many employers prefer to hire those who have a high school or equivalency diploma. New hires receive on-the-job training from their employers, learning about things such as customer service, gas station security, and actions in emergency situations.
